HC Deb 05 May 1931 vol 252 cc190-1
26. Mr. C. WILLIAMS

asked the President of the Board of Trade why the imports of raw cocoa from British countries were less in 1930 than in 1929, while those from foreign countries were considerably more?

Mr. W. GRAHAM

Imports of raw cocoa from British countries were much greater in 1929 than in any of the preceding five years, and resulted in a substantial increase of the stocks of raw cocoa held in bonded warehouses. The imports during 1930 from foreign countries and from British countries showed little variation from the quantities imported in 1926, 1927 or 1928. During each of the last five years the quantity of foreign cocoa imported has not exceeded 7 per cent. of the total imports.

Mr. WILLIAMS

Have the imports of foreign cocoa increased, and if so, why?

Mr. GRAHAM

I do not think that is borne out by the reply. In point of fact, during recent years it has fallen, with the exception of a slight increase in 1930.

Mr. WILLIAMS

Why did the consumption of cocoa drop in 1930?
