HC Deb 05 May 1931 vol 252 c191
27. Mr. C. WILLIAMS

asked the President of the Board of Trade the total quantity of cane sugar imported into the United Kingdom during 1930 from British countries and foreign countries, respectively?

Mr. W. GRAHAM

During the year 1930, the total quantity of unrefined sugar, other than beet sugar, imported into the United Kingdom and registered as consigned from British countries and foreign countries amounted to 10,864,528 cwt. and 24,158,615 cwt., respectively. The imports of refined cane sugar are not separately recorded in the trade returns of the United Kingdom, but the hon. Member will see, from page 23 of the issue of the "Accounts relating to Trade and Navigation of the United Kingdom" for December last, that the imports of refined sugar during 1930 consigned from European countries were over 80 per cent. of the imports from all sources, and that the amount consigned from British countries was very small.

Mr. WILLIAMS

May I ask what the right hon. Gentleman is doing to increase the proportion of British-grown sugar?
