HC Deb 05 May 1931 vol 252 cc193-4
42. Mr. MANDER

asked the Secretary to the Overseas Trade Department what recommendations have been made by the Advisory Committee concerning the propaganda value of films; and what action it is proposed to take?

Mr. GILLETT (Secretary, Overseas Trade Department)

The question was considered by a small informal Departmental Committee, who fully recognised the importance of the film as a form of trade propaganda. As, however, I found that both the Empire Marketing Board and the Travel Association were experimenting in this line, I thought it was unnecessary for the time being for the Department of Overseas Trade to move in the matter.

Mr. MANDER

What steps are being taken for the promotion of British films generally in this connection?

Mr. GILLETT

I have stated in my answer that the matter is being considered by these two organisations. I will communicate more fully with the hon. Member later.
