HC Deb 12 March 1931 vol 249 cc1364-5
29. Mr. EDE

asked the Home Secretary the date upon which the charter of the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company came up for revision, and the date upon which the last supplemental royal charter was granted to that company; and whether any application has been made by the company for any revision of the original charter or for the granting of a supplemental charter?

Mr. CLYNES

I am informed by my Noble Friend the Lord President of the Council that supplemental charters were granted to the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company in 1851, 1852, 1904, 1912 and 1920, each of which involved a revision of the terms of the original charter conferred on the company in 1839. No application for a revision of the original charter or for the grant of a further supplemental charter is at present under consideration.

Mr. EDE

If, and when, such an application is received, will my right hon. Friend bear in mind securing safeguards to prevent certain recent happenings in connection with this company being repeated?

Mr. CLYNES

Yes, I will certainly keep that in mind.
