HC Deb 09 July 1931 vol 254 c2247
25. Sir N. GRATTAN-DOYLE

asked the Home Secretary what has been the number of convictions for drunkenness in Newcastle-on-Tyne during the past three years?

Mr. CLYNES

The annual volumes of licensing statistics show that the figures asked for were 933 and 971 in 192S and 1929. The volume for 1930 is in preparation and will, I hope, soon be published.

Sir N. GRATTAN-DOYLE

Can the right hon. Gentleman say whether the figures that he has given compare favourably or unfavourably with the previous three years?

Mr. CLYNES

Not without notice.

Viscountess ASTOR

Is it true that convictions for drunkenness sometimes have very little to do with the amount of drinking that is taking place?
