HC Deb 09 July 1931 vol 254 cc2240-1
11. Mr. TINKER

asked the Minister of Labour if she has considered the case of an unmarried son residing with his parents where the father is over 65 years of age and in receipt of 10s. a week old age pension, the mother under 65 years of age, and the son the chief means of support, yet when he becomes unemployed he cannot claim dependant's benefit for his mother; and will she consider this point with a view to amending the Unemployment Act to meet this kind of case?

Miss BONDFIELD

Dependants' benefit is payable in the case of a person who has living with him and is wholly or mainly maintaining his mother if her husband is permanently disabled and unable to work. I am not prepared to propose an amendment to this provision by legislation in advance of the report of the Royal Commission of Unemployment Insurance.

Mr. TINKER

Do I take it from the answer that when the report comes to be dealt with, this matter will be taken into consideration?

Miss BONDFIELD

All these points have been put forward for consideration.

Viscountess ASTOR

Does that reply mean that the right hon. Lady is going to accept the findings of the Royal Commission?

Miss BONDFIELD

No.
