HC Deb 27 January 1931 vol 247 c795
49. Mr. SMITHERS

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether, in view of the fall in the price of silver, he will consider the advisability of calling in the debased silver coinage and issuing coinage on the original standard?

Mr. P. SNOWDEN

I would refer the hon. Member to the answer which I gave on this subject on Thursday last in reply to the hon. Member for Stockport (Mr. Hammersley).

Mr. SMITHERS

Will the right hon. Gentleman take expert advice as to the extent to which a rise in the price of silver would help our Eastern trade?

Mr. SNOWDEN

That certainly does not arise out of the question.

Mr. SMITHERS

May I ask the right hon. Gentleman if he has read the question?

Mr. KIRKWOOD

Is the hon. Member allowed to put a question like that?

Mr. SMITHERS

I asked my question in view of the fact that, if our coinage was made of silver, it would increase the price of silver.
