HC Deb 27 January 1931 vol 247 cc795-6
50. Mr. SMITHERS

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the present amount now invested in national savings certificates; and to what purpose has the money so received been applied?

Mr. P. SNOWDEN

The amount invested in savings certificates on 31st March, 1930, was £479 millions, including £121 millions of accrued interest. Sums received from the sale of certificates are applied to repaying the principal of certificates presented for encashment and any balance is applied to redeeming other debt.

Mr. SMITHERS

May I respectfully ask the right hon. Gentleman to read again the last part of his reply, as the noise among his own followers was so great that we could not hear a word of it?
