HC Deb 09 December 1931 vol 260 c1848
27. Mr. T. GRIFFITHS

asked the Minister of Transport whether he is aware that it was decided to widen the dangerous Totnes Road at Paignton two years ago and work was commenced over a year ago, and that the work has been held up through difficulties in rehousing displaced occupiers; can he state who is responsible for this delay; and whether, in view of the unemployment in Paignton, he can authorise the council to proceed with the work on this main road during the winter?

Mr. PYBUS

I understand that the works were started in September, 1930, but were suspended at the end of May, 1931, owing to difficulties connected with land acquisition and rehousing. I do not propose to suggest that work should be deferred, and as the grant has already been made no further authority from my Department is required to enable the urban district council to resume work.

Mr. CHARLES WILLIAMS

Are we to understand that the work was stopped under the Socialist Government?
