HC Deb 09 December 1931 vol 260 cc1848-9
28. Sir CHARLES CAYZER

asked the Minister of Transport whether his attention has been called to the large number of recent accidents involving loss of life which have resulted from motor vehicles fitted with petrol tanks under the dash catching fire after minor collisions or overturning; and whether, in order to safeguard the public from this danger, he will issue regulations which will make it compulsory for new motor vehicles manufactured after a certain specified date to be fitted with rear petrol tanks?

Mr. PYBUS

Large numbers of standard motor vehicles are designed with the petrol tank fitted in front, and so far as my present information goes, I do not think that I should be justified in making a regulation on the lines suggested by my hon. Friend.

Sir C. CAYZER

The use of safety glass on motor vehicles has already been made compulsory, and does not the Minister think it far more important, from the point of view of averting danger, to introduce this reform?

Mr. PYBUS

I am watching all these matters, but I am reluctant to add to the number of regulations at the present time.
