HC Deb 15 April 1931 vol 251 cc182-3
42. Mr. O. LEWIS

asked the Minister of Labour how many cases have been brought to her notice of women who have left their employment for the purpose of getting married claiming and obtaining unemployment benefit although there is no evidence that they have endeavoured to obtain employment since their marriage?

The MINISTER of LABOUR (Miss Bondfield)

A summary of the information immediately available on this subject was contained in a Memorandum submitted to the Royal Commission on Unemployment insurance, and published in the Minutes of Evidence for 31st December (Paper No. 5).

Mr. LEWIS

Can the right hon. Lady tell the House of any steps that have been taken to prevent this abuse?

Miss BONDFIELD

The steps that I took were to direct the attention of the commissioners to the case.
