HC Deb 27 November 1930 vol 245 cc1465-6
3. Major BEAUMONT THOMAS

asked the Minister of Labour whether any workmen have been brought over from Ireland to do road work in this country?

Miss BONDFIELD

No Irish labour has been brought over by the Employment Exchanges for employment on State-aided road schemes or similar work.

Major THOMAS

Has the right hon. Lady any knowledge of the employment of any Irish labour in this country?

Miss BONDFIELD

I have no information as to the practice of employers who have engaged their labour otherwise than through the Employment Exchanges, but it is common knowledge that some big works contractors have a following of Irish navvies, many of whom reside in this country.
