HC Deb 17 November 1930 vol 245 cc3-4
3. Brigadier - General CLIFTON BROWN

asked the Secretary of State for India what steps have been taken to ensure the defence of Peshawar and district from raids by disaffected frontier tribes; and whether the situation with the Afridis is improving or the reverse?

Mr. BENN

I will send the hon. and gallant Member a copy of the communiqué published by the Government of India on 13th October and describing the measures which are being taken to protect Peshawar and district from a repetition of the incursions such as those of June and August. The present situation is explained in the Government of India's recent statement reported in this morning's Press.

Brigadier-General BROWN

Can the right hon. Gentleman say if there was any divergence of opinion between the Government here and the Government of India as to the policy to be pursued, and why has there been such a long delay?

Mr. BENN

The policy pursued is the responsibility of the Government here.

Brigadier - General BROWN

Then there is no truth in the statement that the Viceroy and Government of India had threatened to resign unless the policy which they recommended was undertaken at once?

Mr. BENN

I did not notice that statement. If such were made, there is no truth in it.
