asked the Secretary of State for India if he will inform the House of the progress made by the In- dian banking inquiry committee and whether the Government of India propose to appoint a deputy-chairman of the committee to act during the absence of Sir Bupendranath Mitra in London?

Mr. BENN

The Provincial Banking Inquiry Committees and certain committees set up in the Indian States have submitted reports. The Central Inquiry Committee, which has been continuously engaged on its work, will shortly be conferring with experts from Europe who are proceeding to India. Sir Purshotamdas Thakurdas is the vice-chairman of the Committee.

Does the inquiry include the setting up of a Central Bank?

Mr. BENN

I cannot go into the whole of the terms of reference of this inquiry, but I am prepared to give the terms of reference if the hon. Gentleman asks for them?
