HC Deb 17 November 1930 vol 245 cc44-5
102. Sir W. DAVISON

asked the President of the Board of Education what is the approximate educational expenditure out of public funds per pupil in France and England, respectively?

Sir C. TREVELYAN

The expenditure on elementary education from central and local public funds, in England and Wales, for the year 1929–30 amounted to £12 15s. 6d. per child in average attendance. I regret that I am unable to give comparable figures for France.

Sir W. DAVISON

Surely the Board has some information as to the cost of education in France, and would it not be desirable that they should obtain that information, in view of the allegations that education there is so very much cheaper, and that the results are equally good?

Sir C. TREVELYAN

I am afraid it is not possible. The responsibility for this service in France lies, in the first instance, with the communes, which do not publish any figures.
