HC Deb 03 November 1930 vol 244 c469
61. Mr. REMER

asked the Minister of Agriculture if his attention has been called to the practice of covering up the foreign marks on boxes containing foreign tomatoes in shops and markets; and what action he intends to take under the Merchandise Marks Act?

Dr. ADDISON

I have received no complaint of any such practices, but the public is protected by the provisions of the Order in Council which requires that where tomatoes are exposed for sale by retail, they must be marked by means of a show ticket clearly visible to intending purchasers, bearing the indication of the country of origin in letters not less than half an inch in height.

Mr. REMER

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that in Covent Garden and most other markets these boxes are deliberately covered over with brown paper?

Dr. ADDISON

I will inquire into that matter.
