HC Deb 03 November 1930 vol 244 cc469-70
65. Mr. RAMSBOTHAM

asked the Minister of Agriculture the number of allotments from which the holders obtain a living; what is the estimated average cash yield of a highly-cultivated allotment; what acreage of allotments have in 1929–30 been absorbed for building purposes; what proportion have been replaced; what is the average letting price per acre; and on what proportion of allotments do the local authorities letting them sustain a loss?

Dr. ADDISON

The area of allotments given up by local authorities in 1929, the latest year for which figures are available, was 1,484 acres, but it is not possible to say how much of this land was used for building purposes. The area of new land acquired by local authorities for allotments in 1929 was 1,023 acres. No similar figures are available for allotments provided privately. The usual rent charged by local authorities for allotments ranges from 5s. to 10s. for a 10-rod plot in urban areas, and from £2 to £4 per acre in rural parishes. I am afraid I have no information on the other points mentioned in the question.
