HC Deb 03 November 1930 vol 244 cc464-5
44. Mr. WEST RUSSELL

asked the Secretary to the Overseas Trade Department whether he has recently endeavoured to persuade the British makers of the highest quality footwear to hold their annual shoe fairs at such dates as will in future secure for them the benefit of the visits of overseas buyers to the British Industries Fair or, alternatively, to hold the shoe fairs in the British Industries Fair?

Mr. GILLETT

No, Sir. My Department has refrained from intervening in the arrangements of trade exhibitions which have the support of the trade associations concerned. We should, however, welcome the industry's association with the British Industries Fair for the reason that the hon. Member has in mind.

Mr. A. M. SAMUEL

Has any attempt been made to invite firms in the shoe trade to come in more numerously?

Mr. GILLETT

I do not know that a special appeal has been made to them, but it is always understood that all industries have a right to come in.

Mr. SAMUEL

In my time there was an appeal made. Will that appeal be carried forward?
