HC Deb 19 May 1930 vol 239 cc21-2
39. Mr. MARJORIBANKS

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether a chaplain has yet visited the British Ambassador in Russia; whether he has officiated at any services; and how long his visit or visits have been or when such a visit or visits are likely to take place?

Mr. A. HENDERSON

The British Chaplain at Helsingfors visited His Majesty's Ambassador at Moscow towards the end of January of the present year. His stay lasted four days, during which time he conducted three services for British subjects in the Embassy building. The most suitable occasions for future visits will no doubt be arranged between His Majesty's Ambassador and the Chaplain in question. I should, perhaps, add that the visits of British Chaplains to British Missions abroad are matters purely within the discretion of His Majesty's diplomatic representatives.

Mr. MARJORIBANKS

Has there been no regular chaplain appointed to our Embassy in Moscow because of possible danger to such chaplain or out of tender regard for the Atheistic principles of the Soviet Government?

Mr. THURTLE

Has my right hon. Friend any concern with the spiritual wellbeing of the Embassy at Moscow?
