HC Deb 14 May 1930 vol 238 cc1866-7
36. Sir K. WOOD

asked the Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he can make any further statement in reference to the present position of the West Indian sugar industry; and whether the Government have any further proposals to render assistance to the industry?

Dr. SHIELS

I can only refer the right hon. Member to the statement made by my Noble Friend in another place on the 7th May, to which I am not in a position to add.

Sir K. WOOD

Cannot the hon. Gentleman reply to the last part of the question? Does not the Noble Lord authorise him to state whether the Government have any further proposals for rendering assistance?

Dr. SHIELS

As far as I am aware, no other proposals are contemplated, but the Government, of course, are keeping in close touch with the situation.

Sir K. WOOD

Does the last part of the hon. Gentleman's reply mean anything, or nothing?

Dr. SHIELS

I do not think it is necessary for me to comment on that question.
