HC Deb 17 March 1930 vol 236 c1712
68. Mr. THORNE

asked the Minister of Labour if she is aware that the Lower Steel Works, Pontypool, have been closed down; and if she will state whether the 200 employés are being given unemployment benefit?

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the MINISTRY of LABOUR (Mr. Lawson)

I understand that the Lower Steel Works, Pontypool, closed down temporarily on 1st March. About 230 workpeople have claimed unemployment benefit and payment is being made.

Mr. D. G. SOMERVILLE

Is not the closing of these works due to the dumping of foreign steel into this country?
