HC Deb 13 March 1930 vol 236 c1478
57. Mr. SORENSEN

asked the President of the Board of Education why one-third of the net income of the Robert Ozler Charity will henceforth be applied by the vicars of Leyton and Walthamstow for the use of Church of England Sunday schools, seeing that the original purpose of the testator was to provide for the teaching of the children in reading and writing free, and that only one-tenth of the population of Leyton are Anglican communicants?

Sir C. TREVELYAN

The trustees of Ozler's Charity from the time of its establishment in the Seventeenth Century decided that Church teaching should be given in the school, and their action was confirmed by the Court of Chancery. It would not be proper for me to disregard the claims of the religious side of the trust as thus established.

Mr. SORENSEN

If that is so, will the right hon. Gentleman explain why part of this money is not being used for this charity at the present time?

Sir C. TREVELYAN

I am afraid that I do not understand.
