HC Deb 13 March 1930 vol 236 cc1488-9
79. Mr. GRAHAM WHITE

asked the Minister of Health whether, in view of the suffering and loss of national efficiency due to the incidence of rheumatic diseases, he will set up a committee to consider the best means of extending facilities for treatment and making a comprehensive attack on this evil?

Mr. GREENWOOD

Until further experience has been gained of the treatment of rheumatism at the new clinic established by the British Red Cross Society and elsewhere, I think it would be premature to consider the appointment of a committee for the purpose referred to by the hon. Member. But I shall be prepared to give sympathetic consideration to any practicable proposals which may be submitted to me by local authorities for the provision of facilities for treatment.

Lieut.-Colonel FREMANTLE

Would it not be better, in the opinion of the Ministry of Health, if the Government were to multiply by 10 the very exiguous amount of the Government grants to medical research? Would not that be more likely to produce more results?
