HC Deb 02 June 1930 vol 239 cc1737-8
43. Mr. HANNON

asked the Secretary to the Overseas Trade Department whether his attention has been called to the contemplated increase of the annual licence fee on motor cycles imported into Cyprus from £1 to £3 as from 1st January, 1931; and if, seeing that this increased cost of licence will be in fact prohibitive of the use of motor cycles in Cyprus, and that no change is being made in the tax upon motor cars, he will make appropriate representations to the Government of Cyprus to maintain an equitable relationship between the tax on motor cycles and cars?

Mr. GILLETT

Representations on this matter have been received by His Majesty's Government, and the Governor of Cyprus is being consulted with regard to them. According to the latest information received from the Colony, however, it is not proposed to proceed at present with the Bill or the imposition of the increased taxation.

Mr. HANNON

Does that mean that the project of imposing these import duties has been abandoned for the time being?

Mr. GILLETT

I do not know whether it is actually abandoned, but it is anticipated that it will be.

Mr. HANNON

Will the hon. Gentleman make representations through the Government as to the importance of not taking any steps to impose these duties, in view of the importance of this industry to this country.

Mr. GILLETT

I will consider the matter.
