HC Deb 16 July 1930 vol 241 c1275
44. Colonel WEDGWOOD

asked the Secretary of State for India whether His Majesty's Government intend to summon the round-table conference even if there is no prospect of representative Hindu politicians accepting nomination to such conference or before the civil disobedience campaign has terminated?

Mr. BENN

The policy of His Majesty's Government in relation to the Conference is contained in the Viceroy's speech of the 9th July. Nothing has occurred since then to suggest any need for qualifying his statement.

Colonel WEDGWOOD

Does my right hon. Friend intend to hold this conference even if it is boycotted by the Congress party in India?

Mr. SPEAKER

That is a hypothetical question.

49. Mr. WARDLAW-MILNE

asked the Secretary of State for India if he is now in a position to state what will be the character of the British representation at the round-table Conference in October next?

Mr. BENN

I can say nothing at present.
