43. Colonel WEDGWOOD

asked the Secretary of State for India whether he has had a report on a riot which took place in Rangoon gaol on 24th June, 1930; whether he is able to state the number of officials and convicts killed or wounded; and what steps have been taken or are contemplated for the prevention of such outbreaks in future?

The SECRETARY of STATE for INDIA (Mr. Wedgwood Benn)

I have received information regarding this incident by telegram. The casualties were 25 convicts, one warder and one lorry driver killed, and 58 convicts, of whom three subsequently died, seven warders, and two military police wounded. As regards the last part of the question, I must await the conclusions of the Inquiry which has been ordered by the local government.
