HC Deb 27 January 1930 vol 234 c611
57 and 58. Mr. WEST RUSSELL

asked the Minister of Agriculture (1) what active steps his Department is taking to encourage and assist generally in the development of the sale of fresh demersal fish in the home and export markets;

(2) whether his Department is taking any active steps to extend the distribution and sale of fresh fish in home inland districts?

Mr. N. BUXTON

The British Trawlers' Federation is conducting a most efficient advertising campaign to encourage the consumption of fish in this country, and the Empire Marketing Board is seconding their efforts. The general question of the distribution and marketing of fish at home and abroad is engaging the attention of the Sub-Committee of the Committee of Civil Research appointed to inquire into the fishing industry.

Colonel HOWARD-BURY

For the information, of many hon. Members, would the right hon. Gentleman say what "demersal fish" is?

Mr. BUXTON

In general, fish which are caught by trawlers. Pelagic fish are those caught by drift nets.
