HC Deb 27 January 1930 vol 234 cc610-1
43. Viscount ELMLEY

asked the Minister of Agriculture if he will inquire into the possibility of establishing oyster fisheries off the Norfolk coast between Happisburgh and Yarmouth?

Mr. N. BUXTON

The conditions usually associated with successful oyster cultivation are not found along the stretch of coast referred to in the question. I am sending the Noble Lord a copy of a report of an inquiry recently conducted along the north coast of Norfolk, where the conditions appear to be more favourable.

53. Captain HAROLD BALFOUR

asked the Minister of Agriculture at what date his Department will begin to search for new crab and lobster fishing grounds; and, when found, does he propose to develop the new grounds for breeding purposes?

Mr. BUXTON

It is intended that operations shall be begun in the spring or early summer. With regard to the second part of the question, I am advised that the cultivation of crabs and lobsters in the open sea is not a practical proposition.

Mr. C. WILLIAMS

Where will this research be made, on which seas?

Mr. BUXTON

There are several, and, if the hon. Member will put a question on the Paper, I will give him the precise information.
