HC Deb 12 November 1929 vol 231 cc1700-1
19. Mr. ARTHUR HENDERSON, Jr.,

asked the Lord Privy Seal what relief schemes are in operation in the Cardiff area; and to what extent the Government are affording assistance?

Mr. THOMAS

Schemes of road and railway work, to a total value of £965,000, have been approved for grant, which are expected to give employment equivalent to that of some 3,500 men for a year. The Government assistance takes the form of interest grants, the present value of which is equivalent in the case of the road works to 50 per cent., and, in the case of the railway works, to about 25 per cent. of the total estimated cost.
