§ 14. Mr. WHEATLEYasked the Lord Privy Seal what employment is avail able for people intending to emigrate to Canada next year?
Mr. THOMASArrangements have been made by His Majesty's Government in Canada to place 3,000 single men in farm work next year after a preliminary course of training in this country. Land Settlement schemes have been arranged in New Brunswick, and also with the Canadian Pacific Railway Company and the Hudson's Bay Company, which will provide employment for a limited number of selected families. I should add that the special £10 ocean fare to Canada enables British subjects to avail themselves of the opportunities afforded by Canada, where the industrial employment index during 1929 was higher than it has been for many years.
§ Mr. WHEATLEYWas the right hon. Gentleman informed by the Canadian Government that, with granaries and storehouses bulging with grain, as he informed us, the bringing of a few thousand more men to produce more grain and add to the surplus would help the situation?
Mr. THOMASOh, no; I was not in formed of that by the Canadian Government; I knew it before I left. It was because I knew it that I did not attempt to impose any conditions of migration on the Canadian Government, and merely contented myself with asking them how many they could guarantee to take, and I relied upon their in formation and acted accordingly.
