HC Deb 04 November 1929 vol 231 c584
15. Captain CROOKSHANK

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs what is the extra cost in actual salaries and prospective pensions of changing the British Legation at Warsaw into an Embassy; and what is the reason for this change?

Mr. A. HENDERSON

The total immediate extra cost in salaries consequent on the elevation of His Majesty's Legation at Warsaw to an Embassy is £500 per annum. The extra prospective pension liability will be approximately £400 a year. As regards the reason for the change, Poland is one of the largest countries in Europe both in area and population, and Warsaw is an important political centre, where Embassies have already been established by other Powers, including France and Italy.

Colonel WEDGWOOD

Is the elevation of our Ministry at Warsaw to an Embassy likely to affect the treatment by Poland of the minority populations in that country?
