HC Deb 06 May 1929 vol 227 c1934
10. Mr. KELLY

asked the Under-Secretary of State for India whether a detailed report has been received concerning the cause of the accident that occurred in April, at Syriam, in the boiler room of the Burma Oil Company's refinery, resulting in the death of six Indian workers; and whether steps are being taken to compensate the families of the deceased?

Earl WINTERTON

My Noble Friend has received no official information of this accident. If the dependants of the workmen are entitled to compensation under the Indian Workmen's Compensation Act this will no doubt be paid.

Mr. KELLY

Will the Noble Lord make inquiries as to whether any steps at all are being taken in regard to the families of the deceased, as there is considerable hardship involved?

Earl WINTERTON

I think this is hardly a matter which comes within the province of my Noble Friend. It is a matter, in the first instance, for the representatives of the employers in question, and, in the second instance, for the local government, but, out of courtesy to the hon. Gentleman, I shall endeavour to obtain the information for which he asks.
