HC Deb 29 November 1927 vol 211 cc237-8
5. Mr. HERBERT WILLIAMS

asked the President of the Board of Trade if he can now state the estimate of the national income in 1924 based upon the results of the census of production taken in respect of that year?

Captain HACKING

The issue of the series of preliminary reports on the census is not yet complete, and the examination of the whole of the material with a view to the preparation of such an estimate as my hon. Friend desires has, consequently, not yet been possible.

50. Sir F. SANDERSON

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer the expenditure per head of the population upon the Army, Navy, Air Force, and the Civil Service, respectively, for the two years ended 31st March, 1914, and 31st March, 1927?

The CHANCELLOR of the EXCHEQUER (Mr. Churchill)

I would refer my hon. Friend to the detailed table given by the Financial Secretary in reply to a similar question on the 21st July last, a copy of which I am sending him. It must, of course, be borne in mind that comparisons of pre-War and post-War figures per head of population are very misleading owing, first, to the fact that the population of the Irish Free State is included in calculating the pre-War figures and excluded in calculating the post-War figures; and secondly, and to a far greater extent, owing to the alteration in money values, which must always be taken into account.
