HC Deb 29 November 1927 vol 211 cc238-9
9. Mr. DIXEY

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he is aware of the fact that the iron and steel trade throughout the country are now united in their desire to bring this industry under the Safeguarding of Industries Act; and whether, in view of the position of the industry and the importance of it to the coal trade, he will reconsider the position of this industry with the Cabinet Committee?

Sir B. CHADWICK

I would refer my hon. Friend to the answer given by the Prime Minister to the hon. Member for Flint (Mr. Goodman Roberts), on 10th November, a copy of which I am sending him.

Mr. DIXEY

In view of the importance of the question, cannot the hon. Member's Department make representations?

Sir B. CHADWICK

The matter is fully dealt with in the Prime Minister's answer, a copy of which I will send to the hon. Member.

Mr. SEXTON

Would it be possible to give us the actual effect of safeguarding industries all round?

Sir B. CHADWICK

That does not arise out of the question.

Mr. T. WILLIAMS

Can the Minister give any idea as to the effect of exporting cheap coal to foreign countries would have upon cheap imported steel?

Sir B. CHADWICK

I do not think that arises out of the question.

Captain ARTHUR EVANS

Will the hon. Member ask the Prime Minister to bear in mind the views that were expressed by the Conservative Conference at Cardiff on the Motion move by the hon. Member for Newport (Mr. Clarry)?
