HC Deb 10 May 1927 vol 206 cc186-7
8. Mr. ROBINSON

asked the Secretary of State for War the average cost per house, and the number of rooms per house, in the Salisbury Plain, Avon Valley, cottage housing scheme in the year 1926 and the current year; and whether the building is being done by direct labour or under contract?

Sir L. WORTHINGTON-EVANS

The average cost of these houses, which contain a living room, scullery and three bedrooms, was £490 in 1926, and it is estimated that the cost will be approximately the same during the current year. The building is being done by direct labour.

Mr. TAYLOR

Is that inclusive or exclusive of the price of land?

Sir L. WORTHINGTON-EVANS

I am afraid I cannot say without notice.

Lieut.-Commander KENWORTHY

Is this work being done by the Royal Engineers or under their supervision?

Sir L. WORTHINGTON-EVANS

Yes.

Lieut.-Commander KENWORTHY

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that this is a good example of State enterprise?

Sir L. WORTHINGTON-EVANS

That depends on whether the price is equal or not.
