§ 58. Lieut.-Colonel HOWARD-BURYasked the Home Secretary whether he has any further information with regard to the starting of work on new two-seater taximeter cabs; and when, and in what numbers, and at what price are they expected to be put on the streets?
§ Sir W. JOYNSON-HICKSI am afraid there is no further information that I can usefully give the House at present. I have made it possible for these cabs to be placed on the streets, but the responsibility for producing the cabs rests on the trade, and not on me. If they arc not forthcoming, I propose to take other measures regarding cabs generally.
§ Lieut.-Colonel HOWARD-BURYHas my right hon. Friend seen the statements in the newspapers to the effect that there is no intention of putting these cabs on the streets, and, if there is no intention, will he reduce the fares of ordinary taxi-cabs?
§ Mr. R. MORRISONHas the right hon. Gentleman seen the picture in the Press this week-end of one of them?
§ Sir W. JOYNSON-HICKSI have seen several guesses. Some say they are and some that they are not to be put on the streets. I am in communication with the cab trade with regard to the alteration of fares generally.
