HC Deb 10 February 1927 vol 202 c270
61. Mr. T. THOMSON

asked the Minister of Labour the number of persons unemployed at the present time, and the numbers for the same period last year?

Sir A. STEEL-MAITLAND

On 31st January, 1927, the total number of persons on the registers of Employment Exchanges in Great Britain was 1,331,500. The corresponding figure for 1st February, 1926, was 1,174,978.

Mr. T. WILLIAMS

Can the right hon. Gentleman state approximately how many mine workers are included in that number?

Sir A. STEEL-MAITLAND

For details I should like to have notice, but approximately 200,000 at the end of last month, and a year ago, speaking from memory, it was not substantially over or below 100,000.
