HC Deb 10 February 1927 vol 202 c269
20. Mr. TREVELYAN THOMSON

asked the Minister of Health whether, in the cases where unemployment has been exceptionally severe during the past six months and is still abnormal, he is prepared to recommend the Government to offer these districts some further assistance?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

Assistance by way of grants-in-aid of schemes for the relief of unemployment is given to local authorities in areas where unemployment is exceptional and where suitable works which would not otherwise be carried out for a considerable time can be undertaken. In certain exceptional cases assistance by way of loan to meet abnormal current expenditure will be continued.
