HC Deb 10 February 1927 vol 202 cc268-9
19. Mr. H. WILLIAMS

asked the Minister of Health whether all able- bodied persons who are in Poor Law institutions are required to register at the nearest Employment Exchange; and what steps are taken to facilitate the efforts of such persons to obtain employment?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

There is no regulation dealing with this matter but it would be the practice of a board of guardians in any suitable ease to require persons of this kind to register. Apart from registration, hoards of guardians are no doubt alive to the importance of facilitating the securing of employment, though this is not a matter on which reports are regularly made to me. I am however aware of one large union in which good results were obtained by a specially qualified officer who undertook this work.

Mr. A. V. ALEXANDER

In view of the abnormal state of unemployment, is the right hon. Gentleman going to endeavour to remove the restrictions on relief works under the Unemployment Grants Committee?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

That is quite a different question.
