§ Sir A. STEEL-MAITLANDOn 28th November, 1927, there were 3,852 persons on the register of the Grimsby Employment Exchange, as compared with 5,003 on 29th November, 1926. Of the total of 3,852, 3,372 were men, 248 women and 232 juveniles.
§ 25. Mr. WOMERSLEYasked the Minister of Labour the number of men employed on works approved by the Unemployment Grants Committee in the area of the Grimsby Employment Exchange; and if any further schemes for providing work have been approved for this winter for the same area?
§ Sir A. STEEL-MAITLANDAccording to returns received, 23 men were employed on the 26th November, 1927, on schemes for the relief of unemployment, approved by the Unemployment Grants Committee, in the Grimsby County Borough area. I am advised that no further relief schemes in this area have been approved by the Unemployment Grants Committee.
§ Mr. WOMERSLEYAre the Unemployment Grants Committee prepared to receive any schemes and consider them effectively?
§ Sir A. STEEL-MAITLANDWhen they were asked, their answer, I believe, was that the unemployment in the area was not exceptional.
§ Mr. WOMERSLEYIs it a fact that the Unemployment Grants Committee have intimated that they are not prepared to receive schemes?
§ Sir A. STEEL-MAITLANDThat was the effect of their answer.
§ Mr. T. WILLIAMSIs the right hon. Gentleman aware of the statement made by the hon. Member last evening, and of the fact that it was totally different from the statement he now makes?
