HC Deb 07 December 1927 vol 211 cc1364-5
23. Mr. KIRKWOOD

asked the Minister of Labour whether he is aware of the growing practice by which engineering firms in Scotland insert Press advertisements for draughtsman posts to which applicants have to reply to a box number, and that many applicants, unaware of the identity of the advertiser, apply to their own employers, who thereupon dispense with their services; and whether in such cases insurance benefit is paid?

Sir A. STEEL-MAITLAND

I am not aware that this is a growing practice. The statutory authorities, with whom the decision as to allowance of benefit would rest, have not hitherto had a case of this kind, and I cannot therefore quote an actual decision; but I see no reason to suppose that benefit would be disallowed if the termination of employment was due solely to the ground suggested in the question.
