HC Deb 04 April 1927 vol 204 c1678
101. Colonel DAY

asked the Minister of Transport if he has now received a lie-port with reference to the subsidence which occurred on 8th March between Chigwell and Woodford, which was the cause of a great part of the Hainault Road bridge carrying the main road falling down; and if, in view of the danger to the residents of this neighbourhood, he will make representations to the London and North Eastern Railway Company and the authorities concerned that a new bridge be erected?

Colonel ASHLEY

The railway company have informed me that the collapse of this bridge occurred as the result of a slip in the adjacent cutting. The damage to the bridge affected only a relatively small part of the whole structure, and the portion affected is now in course of being replaced. I see no reason to suppose that the residents in the neighbourhood are in any way endangered, or that there is any necessity to construct a new bridge.

Colonel DAY

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that the water has been cut off from the houses through this fall, and can ho say whether it has been connected again?

Colonel ASHLEY

As the portion affected is now in course of being replaced, I take it that the water main is too.
