§ 8. Lieut.-Commander KENWORTHYasked the President of the Board of Trade whether he has made any progress towards finding ways and means of helping the production and exhibition of British cinematograph films; and what is the state of his negotiations with the interested parties and the various sections of the cinematograph industry?
§ Sir P. CUNLIFFE-LISTERI have placed in the Library a full report of my meeting with representatives of exhibitors, renters and producers on Friday last. That report sets out the views and suggestions of the Government. The joint committee representing the various interests has resumed its discussions, and I hope to receive their considered opinion at an early date.
§ Lieut.-Commander KENWORTHYIn that statement will the right hon. Gentleman say what he means by 12 months? Does he mean that he will take action before 12 months are out if something is not done by the trade; or does he mean that at the end of the 12 months he will again consider the situation?
§ Sir P. CUNLIFFE-LISTERI think it means exactly what is says—that you have got to have a controlled period, and' if within that time there is no distinct improvement, then we should act.
§ Colonel DAYCan the right hon. Gentleman say when the period will commence?
§ Sir P. CUNLIFFE-LISTERNo, I cannot give a definite date for that, because it would involve detailed consultation with the trade.
§ Lieut.-Commander KENWORTHYAs the situation develops, will the right hon. Gentleman see if it is possible to let the House know if he decides to take action in the near future
§ Sir P. CUNLIFFE-LISTERCertainly, I shall only be too glad to do that. It is a very complicated matter, and if the hon. and gallant Member will put a question down I shall be very glad to let the House know exactly what happens. 220 My difficulty is that in regard to a very complicated issue like this it is not possible to do justice to the subject by question and answer, but if the hon. and gallant Member will put a question down later on I will look into the facts and give him an answer.
