HC Deb 16 March 1926 vol 193 cc218-9
7. Mr. H. WILLIAMS

asked the President of the Board of Trade if he can state the total imports into the United Kingdom from, and exports to, British Crown Colonies, Protectorates, and mandated territories, in 1925, and the corresponding figures for 1913, so far as they can be estimated, having regard to the fact that some of the mandated territories, as they now exist, were not separate political entities in 1913?

Sir P. CUNLIFFE-LISTER

The answer is rather long, and includes a table of figures. Accordingly, if my hon. Friend will permit me, I will have it circulated in the OFFICIAL REPORT.

Following is the answer:

Excluding British self - governing answer is rather long, and includes a table of figures. Accordingly, if my hon. British Empire in 1913, the trade of the United Kingdom with British Colonies and Protectorates was as follows:

Merchandise consigned from or to these Countries. 1925. 1913.
£'000 £'000
Imports into the United Kingdom. 77,161 40,930
Exports from the United Kingdom.—
Produce and Manufactures of the United Kingdom. 58,490 32,868
Imported Merchandise 4,079 2,416
It is not possible to exclude, in certain cases, trade carried on in 1925 with regions now incorporated with British Colonies or Protectorates, for which separate records of trade are not available. I am unable to supply the estimates suggested in the question in the absence of adequate records of our trade in 1913 with territories since incorporated in the British Empire or administered under mandates.
