HC Deb 29 July 1925 vol 187 cc405-6
6. Mr. THURTLE

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether the British Embassy in Russia and its contents have now been returned to His Majesty's representative in that country; and whether His Majesty's Government now regards this matter as closed?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

The former Embassy building in Petrograd was not the property of His Majesty's Government, so that the question of its return does not arise; it was a leasehold, and I think the period of the lease has now expired. The Soviet Government has informed His Majesty's Chargé d'Affaires in Moscow that instructions have been issued for the property of the British Embassy in Leningrad to be handed over, and the necessary arrangements for receiving this property are now under consideration.
