HC Deb 22 July 1925 vol 186 c2183
20. Major HORE-BELISHA

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty whether he is now examining into the possibilities of using the equipment and personnel of the dockyards for the making or repairing of products other than and in addition to ships of war?

Mr. DAVIDSON

The Royal Dockyards are maintained for the purposes of the Royal Navy, and are not suitably equipped and organised for the economical performance of commercial work; there is no intention to enlarge their functions by undertaking work not directly required for His Majesty's service which could equally well be carried out elsewhere.

Major HORE-BELISHA

Is the hon. Member aware that the First Lord promised to consider this matter, in view of the very strong opinions expressed in all quarters of the House? Seeing that grave unemployment is bound to follow a progressive policy of disarmament, cannot he take a more considerate view?

Mr. DAVIDSON

This answer was framed after consideration.
