HC Deb 14 July 1924 vol 176 c23
55. Mr. SCURR

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies the numbers, respectively, of the white, Indian, and African members elected to the Legislative Assembly of British Guiana; and whether any Indians or Africans are members of the Governor's Executive Council?

Mr. THOMAS

I have not the information available which would enable me to answer this question, and, in any case, I deprecate any attempt to classify the peoples of British Guiana on racial lines.

Mr. ORMSBY-GORE

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that in the British Guiana Combined Court such differentiation is never made, and such racial differentiation is quite unknown in the West Indies?

Mr. THOMAS

That is why I said I deprecated it.
