HC Deb 05 July 1923 vol 166 c588
6. Mr. SHORT

asked the Minister of Pensions whether, in fixing the new pensions for widows, the age of the applicant is taken into consideration; and, if so, at what age, if any, is an applicant considered to be infirm and incapable of self-support?

Major TRYON

I assume that the hon. Member is referring to a need pension to the widowed mother of a deceased soldier. In these cases an award of pension is dependent upon the claimant being wholly or partly incapable of self-support by reason of age or infirmity. If infirmity be medically established, the question of age does not arise, but it is the practice to assume incapacity without inquiry, if the claimant has attained the age of 60 years.
