Mr. HANNONasked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury what was the total personnel of the Civil Service, excluding industrial workmen, prior to the war; what is the total personnel to-day, 189 including the temporary staffs; and what proportion of the present personnel is employed in the new Departments, i.e., Pensions, Labour, Air, Food, Shipping, Liquidation and Disposals, Forestry Commission, War Graves Commission, Department of Overseas Trade, Mines Department, Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, Ministry of Transport, National Savings Committee, Passport Department, Enemy Debts Department (Board of Trade), Public Trustee (Trading with the Enemy Acts) and in the Irish Departments?
§ Sir J. BAIRDThe total personnel of the Civil Service prior to the War, excluding industrial staff, amounted to approximately 283,000; the total personnel to-day, excluding industrial staff, is approximately 350,000. Of the latter number about 53,000 are employed in the new Departments referred to by the hon. Member. The total also includes a further 25,000 who have been transferred to the Governments of Northern or Southern Ireland or are engaged on Reserved or Agency Services in Ireland.
