HC Deb 06 May 1920 vol 128 c2209
13. Colonel ASHLEY

asked the Chief Secretary for Ireland if he will state what steps are being taken in Ireland to protect tax collectors in the discharge of their duty, in view of the threats made against them and the violence sometimes offered to them?

Mr. HENRY

A large number of cases have recently occurred in which Tax offices were raided and the books taken away and burnt. Claims for compensation have been made in these cases. I am inquiring for cases where threats or violence have been used to such collectors.

Mr. LYNN

Is it a fact that in some cases where people were caught red-handed they have already been released?

Mr. HENRY

I am not aware of any such cases.

Mr. LYNN

Well, I can give you one.
